A Generous Spirit |
A young woman once described to me how she went about characterizing the churches she knew. The congregation either had a “mean spirit”, an “uptight spirit” or a “generous spirit”. It would be interesting to unpack those descriptions of hers sometime, but that’s not my purpose at the moment. What I do want to convey is that my initial and continuing experience here at First Church is that you are a congregation with a generous spirit. This generous spirit is catching, challenging, life-affirming, and a great gift from God. You have warmly welcomed me. You have provided me with the resources needed to do what you have asked me to do while Kendrick is on sabbatical. You have drawn me into the church’s worship, vision, and program. I am beginning to see what identifies you as the Church of Jesus Christ in this place. I am grateful for the opportunity to be among you.
