LENT (Dr. Norris) PDF Print

The center point of the Christian year is Holy Week, including Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter.  Special events in our lives usually require preparation.  Holy Week is no different. From the beginning of the Christian Church, members set aside the forty days before Easter (excluding Sundays that are always celebrations of the Resurrection) as a time for prayer, meditation, self-examination and study.  We encourage you to prepare at home and in your own way—alone, with families or with friends.  But as a church we offer special programs, in addition to our weekly Adult Forums in the chapel, for you to make ready for Holy Week.

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday.  This year it falls on February 17th.  We will embark upon the Lenten season with an Ash Wednesday service at 7:00 PM in our Sanctuary. We encourage you to attend this very meaningful worship moment.

Then for the next five Wednesday Evenings—2/24, 3/3, 10, 17, 24—we will offer our Lenten Suppers and Programs.  For the first dinner (2/24) we will provide Italian food; we will be your hosts.  The following four dinners will be pot luck, so we ask you to bring a main course, side dish or salad to feed 4-6 people.  Dinner will start at 6:00 PM.

At 7:00 PM we will have brief vespers and the program, ending at 8:30 PM. The topic Susan and I have chosen for this year is forgiveness. Except for the command to love, nothing is more central to the Christian faith than forgiveness.  And, few things are harder.  So we will spend these five weeks dealing with issues of forgiving others and accepting others, of forgiving ourselves and accepting ourselves.  We will offer the answers given by traditional and contemporary theology and psychology. There will be much to learn, to consider, to experience. So please join us for one, some or all of these evenings of Christian community and spiritual growth.

In Christ’s love,
Kendrick
