Preservation Grant to First Church PDF Print

First Congregational Church Guilford is pleased to announce that in December 2008 we were awarded a Preservation Technical Assistance Grant in the amount of $11,471.97 from the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation. The Preservation Technical Assistance Grant is a matching grant and will be used to fund a Conditions Assessment study of the portico and façade of the 1829 church sanctuary and preparation of contract documents to correct the causes and effects of the deterioration. Over the course of many months the church has received numerous suggestions from contractors on how to treat the deterioration which have ranged from limited patching to wholesale replacement of all columns. Before making any investment in repairs the church decided to seek impartial and professional advice from Gibble Norden Champion Brown Consulting Engineers (GNCB) of Old Saybrook. GNCB is a structural engineering firm with special experience in historic church buildings.

The Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation awarded Historic Preservation Technical Assistance Grants to seven different non-profit organizations and municipalities around the state. These competitive grants are awarded based upon merit, and First Church is delighted to have been selected to receive a grant.  Weather permitting you will see the engineers at work in a bucket truck sometime in the early spring. The GNCB final report will include bid-level documentation and will be used to apply for further grants to pay for the actual restoration.
