May 5: Daniel Berrigan

A Retreat with Daniel Berrigan

May 5, 9:30-3:00
First Congregational Church, UCC
Guilford

Peacemaking
in a Nation at War

Image
Details follow below.

Our resource will be the prophet Isaiah. In the morning the focus will be on chapter 2, providing the Vision, God's hope for humankind: "swords into plowshares."

In the afternoon the focus will be on chapter 19, describing our Reality: the idolatries, greed and violence that result in wars, including the Iraq disaster. We will seek God's gift of a new heart, new communities of reconciliation, the renewal of hope that we may be faithful to our calling to be peacemakers.

The process, morning and afternoon, will include Biblical presentation, reflection and dialogue.

Cost: Nothing for those with limited resources or for those who work with the poor, such as Catholic Worker folk. $15 for all others, payable at registration. Lunch will be provided.

Daniel Berrigan is a Jesuit priest, a poet and peacemaker. With his late brother Philip he helped to seed three generations of peacemakers: during the Vietnam war, the cold war, and now the Iraq war. Author of over 30 books, he has taught at many universities across the country and abroad, and won countless awards for his work and witness. He is the co-founder of Plowshares, a group committed to non-violent civil disobedient protest at the Pentagon and other war-making enterprises. He is a man of scholarship, ironic wit and deep Biblical faith, one of a very few in this time for whom the term "prophet" is fitting.
