“Blessed are the peacemakers….” Matthew 5: 9
THE GATHERING
PRELUDE Largo (Symphony 9) arr. from Dvorak WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS INTROIT CALL TO WORSHIP: adapted from B. Prewer Leader: Let us center ourselves not on our wants or difficulties but on our God: People: in the silent places of my soul I turn to God, for God alone is our rock and salvation.
Leader: Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the good news of God, saying the time has come, the realm of God is at hand. People: The realm of God is not very far from any one of us, For in God we live, move and have our being. Leader: Jesus said: repent and believe the good news. People: The time has come. In the silent places of my soul I turn to God, for God alone is our rock and salvation. UNISON PRAYER OF INVOCATION: Gracious Christ, you came to the fishermen when the prophet John was taken away. Come to us now, as we fear losses of our own. Grant us courage to cast aside the nets that bind us, to follow you into true freedom and newness of life. Help us to be faithful disciples that we might inspire others to follow in your ways. Amen. *HYMNS & PSALMS # 345 Dear Lord and Father of Mankind
CONFESSION AND PRAISE
CALL TO PRAYER UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION: adapted from S. Cervas God, you call us and sometimes we duck under the table hoping you didn’t notice us. You call us and sometimes we try to look too busy to be bothered at the moment. You call us and sometimes we just say, “No!” We know that we aren’t expected to do everything but we often forget that you call us to be ourselves in the places where our very self is what is most needed. So give us the grace to say “Yes” to your call even now as we offer our silent confessions…. RESPONSE OF THE PEOPLE
JOYS AND CONCERNS PASTORAL PRAYER THE LORD’S PRAYER (trespasses) CALL TO OFFERING OFFERTORY You Are Called to Tell the Story D. Williams You are called to tell the story, passing words of life along, then to blend your voice with others as you sing the sacred song. Christ be known in all our singing, filling all with songs of love. You are called to teach the rhythm of the dance that never ends, then to move within the circle, hand in hand with strangers, friends. Christ be known in all our dancing, touching all with hands of love. You are called to set the table, blessing bread as Jesus blest, then to come with thirst and hunger, needing care like all the rest. Christ be known in all our sharing, feeding all with signs of love. May the One whose love is broader than the measure of all space give us words to sing the story, move among us in this place. Christ be known in all our living, filling all with gifts of love. text: Ruth Duck, (c) 1992 *HYMN: You Walk Along Our Shoreline (in bulletin) BENEDICTION BENEDICTION RESPONSE: Amen POSTLUDE Fanfare and Procession K. Coach Will Porter to Speak Next Sunday’s Adult Forum - Did you know that one of our nation’s best college coaches attends First Church? Will Porter took over the head coaching job of Women’s Crew at Yale thirteen years ago. In the last eleven years they have gone to the NCAA finals—the top 12 teams in the country. This is a remarkably consistent level of excellence. The key reason explains Tom Beckett, Yale Athletic Director, is that Will is amazing at building a team that supports, respects and trusts one another. Come to the Chapel next Sunday and hear Will, our own Geno, speak about his principles and how First Church can be envisioned as a community (team) whose mission is the work of God. Kendrick
